As the election rages on, politicians rant, and Starbucks comes out with the new Pumpkin Spice Latte, it is important to take the time to acknowledge a notable change within the Durham Academy community — the new schedule. For those unaware, the change merges the early morning break used for advisory, class meetings and morning meetings with tutorial, and delays it to take place after two class periods in the morning.
While the length of each period has not changed and the order and number of classes has stayed the same, some are not too happy with the adjustment. For instance, senior Rohan Patel, with his stomach growling for change, expressed his dissatisfaction.
“I think that the new schedule promotes starvation,” he said. “With the old schedule, if you missed breakfast, you could eat during advisory, and if you were going to be busy during lunch, you could eat during tutorial. With the new schedule, the break is an awkward time that’s too late for breakfast, but too early for lunch.”
While most students have not expressed their unhappiness with the new schedule because of their rumbling belly, there is a portion of the DA community that preferred the old schedule. One sophomore, who asked to be anonymous, agreed with Patel. “It’s like, just like, annoying.”
On the other hand, many people appreciate the updated schedule and feel it’s had a positive impact on their day-to-day experience. “As an advisor, I love that tutorial is right after advisory,” said English teacher Dr. Harry Thomas. “I love that because if I need to talk to an advisee about something in private, it’s easy to ask them to hang out after advisory so we can talk privately at the start of tutorial. I’m also really in favor of our overall scheduling being more consistent. So I like that we generally have one set schedule,” he said.
Many students are also in favor of the new schedule. “I like how it’s easy to have assemblies now ’cause it fits right into the schedule, which so happens to be the same one every day,” said junior Cami Simpson, content with the consistency of the new schedule.
It would seem that there is a balance of extremes at Durham Academy. While some people find the new schedule annoying and a cruel infliction of starvation, others absolutely love it. Though there’s no definitive answer whether the change is for the worse or for the better, it is clearly an important adjustment for everyone at DA.
All we know for sure is that, for now, the updated schedule is not leaving anytime soon.
